Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Program Information

The foundations of the Physiotherapy profession in Turkey were laid with the establishment of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Ankara University by Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı in 1961.

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation was established within the Faculty of Health Sciences in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547 amended by Law No. 2880, at the Higher Education Executive Board Meeting dated 28.11.2018 of the Higher Education Council Presidency. The Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation started to form its academic staff and infrastructure as of the 2019-2020 Academic Year and began admitting students for the first time in the 2020-2021 Academic Year.

The development of physiotherapy according to the changing needs of society (increase in the elderly population, diseases caused by obesity and inactivity, etc.), the increase in the expectation of quality of life, and the understanding of the importance of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in society lead to an increasing demand and interest in the physiotherapy profession in Turkey. The physiotherapy profession was defined as the 6th best profession in America and the world in the 2015 reports. Parallel to the increasing health problems in society that require physiotherapy and rehabilitation, the need for physiotherapists to be employed in this field is increasing day by day both in the world and in Turkey.

1.     A one-year foreign language preparatory program is applied to students who wish, within the quota. The duration of the preparatory program is not included in the minimum education period.

2.     Internship is mandatory in the program.

3.     Students who will enroll in the program are required to wear the uniform required by the profession in practical courses.

4.     To be successful in the program, it is important to be able to skillfully use hands and fingers.

5.     Due to the predominantly practical nature of the education in the program, those with uncorrectable hearing, speech, vision, and advanced physical disabilities may face difficulties in following the courses.

Tuition Fee: During course registration/renewal procedures, the contribution fee/tuition fee can be learned from the "Fee Information" menu on the Student Information System (https://obs.mehmetakif.edu.tr/oibs/ogrenci/login.aspx) address. No tuition fee is charged from students in our department.
 

Location of the Department: Our department, affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences, is physically located within the Faculty of Sports Sciences building and the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Program Accreditation: Our department has not yet been accredited by the Association for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Health Sciences Education Programs (SABAK) as it has not yet graduated any students.

WHY MAKÜFTR?

Why should you choose our department, which we abbreviate as "MAKÜFTR" at our university?

Academic staff

First of all, our department has a very active, dynamic, and competent academic staff. Although it is not very large, it consists of 2 Associate Professors, 2 Doctor Lecturers, and 1 Research Assistant, who are always producing, working, researching, and cannot stop teaching, and also serve consultants and patients for public health. Our students can easily reach their academic advisors and faculty members.

Infrastructure

Our department has all the infrastructure and equipment required for a four-year undergraduate education in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Our department, which has large laboratories and practice rooms, has 1 Manual Therapy Laboratory, 1 Electrophysical Agents (Electrotherapy) Laboratory, 1 Therapeutic Exercise Laboratory, and 4 classrooms. Our department is also integrated with the sports facilities of our university. Our students can easily and free of charge benefit from facilities such as an indoor sports hall, fitness hall, wrestling hall, and dance hall. In addition, our department has a wide and comprehensive inventory consisting of electrotherapy devices, heat-light therapy devices, laser devices, manual therapy tools, basic measurement and evaluation devices, high-level computerized measurement devices used in research, and special tools and devices for athlete evaluation and physiotherapy. In addition, there are many treatment beds, mats, pilates balls, and elastic bands for our students to easily practice in the courses.

MAKÜFTR on the way to becoming a brand in sports physiotherapy!

Our department is also one of the stakeholders of our university's Athlete Camp and Athlete Training project. Our department aims to train expert, qualified sports physiotherapists in the evaluation of physical structure in athletes, performance measurements, prevention of injuries, and treatment of injuries. It continues its efforts at full speed to achieve this with its competent academic staff and technical infrastructure in the field of sports. Our mission is to ensure that our graduates from MAKÜFTR are more preferred and employed as sports physiotherapists. During their education, our students have the opportunity to observe sports clubs that come to our university for camp and competition organizations.

Practical Training

Evidence-based practical training forms the basis of physiotherapy education. The development of the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in the clinic for physiotherapists who work directly with patients, clients, athletes, and healthy individuals is essential for more effective treatment and intervention. In our department, our students receive a total of 413 hours of practical training during the 4-year undergraduate education. While some of this training is given as practical courses in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades, the remaining large part is given as summer internships in the 2nd and 3rd grades and clinical practice training in the last grade in hospitals, healthy life centers, special education and rehabilitation centers, consultancy centers, and athlete health centers. In addition, practical training is also provided to our students at the Physiotherapy Consultancy Center, which was opened in our department in 2023.

Researches – Projects

Our department has also adopted the mission of training future academicians who will work in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, in addition to training colleagues. One of the main duties of universities is to carry out scientific research. While our students are required to take Research Methods and Biostatistics courses, they can also choose Academic Writing Techniques and Evidence-Based Physiotherapy courses as electives.

Many research projects are carried out in our department with our academicians, graduate, and undergraduate students. In 2023, all three TÜBİTAK 2209-A student projects, which were jointly applied by our faculty members and students, were accepted by TÜBİTAK and the research is currently ongoing.
